The donut world has experienced some exciting innovations and irresistible creations over the last several years. The dessert market, once dominated by cakes and cupcakes, is now seeing a shift from fluffy sweets to fried treats. It’s all thanks to the crazy, creative minds of donut connoisseurs across the world and a 60-year old donut dynasty that’s helped put donuts back on the map. Here are 5 donut game changers we’re thankful to Krispy Kreme for:

1. A New Donut Hole

For $2.89 donut lovers got to enjoy Krispy Kreme donuts at the push of a button. Krispy Kreme’s pop-up donut ATM in Holborn, London dispensed Nutty Chocolatta donuts (Nutella filled donuts drenched in chocolate and sprinkled with nuts). For a limited time Londoners were able to sample these yummy donuts before they went on sale to the public. Could we see donut glory holes popping up across North America? Yes, please!

2. The Double Hundred Dozen Box of Donuts

Before you go drowning in your own drool puddle, the Krispy Kreme box filled with 2400 glazed donuts was sadly a one-time stunt to promote its “Krispy Kreme Occasions” division in the UK. On the plus side, UK residents can order amazing customized donut creations for every special occasion or corporate event including donut towers and personalized name-plated donuts. Maybe not as exciting as a giant box of donuts, but at least you won’t have to worry about burning those 500,000 calories.

3. Free donuts

At special times of the year at select locations, Krispy Kreme does a beautiful thing; they give away FREE DONUTS! Whether it’s a free donut of your choosing to celebrate National Donut Day, a freshly picked glazed donut to commemorate a made up holiday like The Donut Harvest (aka April Fools Day), or sharing a donut with your sweet sidekick on Super Hero Day, the only thing better than a donut is a free donut.

4. One glazed ring to rule them all

Although Krispy Kreme offers a ton of delicious donuts in all flavours, shapes and sizes, we have to give props to the fried ring that started the Krispy Kreme dream and single-handedly ruined diets everywhere, their original perfectly glazed donuts. Cue the Sinéad O’Connor music: “Nothing compares to you….” The crack of the donut world, the Krispy Kreme glazed is a simple yet highly addictive donut that’s been turning us into donut junkies for the past 60 years and is still going strong.

5. Fresh donut alert

You can’t beat a freshly made batch of donuts. That moment when you’re next in line  and you’re eagerly hoping someone comes out of the back with a hot tray of your favourite donuts is nerve wrecking. Sometimes you get lucky with a donut hot off the line and sometimes you get stuck with the morning’s less fresh dozen. Well, stale donuts no more thanks to Krispy Kreme’s Hot Light app that tells you when their donuts are fresh out of the oven.
