Each year, National Donut Day takes the country by storm, providing many of us with an excuse to indulge in something sweet. With origins dating back to 1938, this is much more than just another national food day. According to Time, women volunteers for the Salvation Army made donuts for soldiers overseas during World War I. National Doughnut Day was launched by the Chicago brand of the Salvation army to raise funds and awareness for the organization’s community work. Today, many chains and specialty shops run promotions offering free or discounted donuts, contests and countless other ways to celebrate. We’ve put together a list of the five best places to reap National Donut Day benefits that can be found across the country!

This year be on the lookout for this contest to be in the running for a year’s worth of donuts while giving to a great cause!
