The first Friday of June every year brings us a precious gift, National Donut Day. All over the country, chains and locally owned shops alike provide customers with deals and freebies surpassing the year before. Started as a fundraiser in 1938 for the Chicago Salvation Army, this day has now become a national phenomenon. The donut has risen from just a breakfast treat to an international dessert craze, and this year marked one of the best Donut Days yet! We’re taking a look at three major cities and how their National Donut Day deals turned heads locally and nationally.

Chicago is where this holiday all began, so it obviously concocted some of the best NDD specials. At Beaver Donuts, the first 500 customers to visit each of their three locations received four mini donuts, a sample-sized donut milkshake, and Metropolis coffee all for free! Stan’s Donuts offered a free glazed donut with the purchase of either a coffee or gelato at their multiple locations. If you dined at Porkchop, you could snag a free bacon maple-glazed donut with your dinner. Italian Eatery, Bar Siena, offered a specialty cookies-and-cream donut just for the occasion. Chicago definitely cooked up some great treats for National Donut Day 2016, and we can’t wait for what’s in store next year.

Foodies and surfers alike munched on Donut Day deals in LA. Sidecar Doughnuts in Santa Monica gave away free donuts to its first 100 customers. Randy’s Donuts did free donut holes from 6am-12pm under their iconic giant donut sign. A new vegan donut spot, Donut Farm, in Silver Lake gave away free coffee to the first 30 people who bought donuts. Birdies in Downtown LA conducted an Instagram contest for one winner to receive a 24k gold donut. DK Donuts even partnered with Grubhub to deliver two half-dozen orders for the price of one. With contests and giveaways this absurd, we’ll be hoping to travel to LA for National Donut Day next year!

What else screams New York City like a coffee in one hand and a donut in the other on the way to work? Diners at Dun-Well Doughnuts in Bushwick got one small free cake donut with the purchase of an espresso beverage. Doughnut Plant handed customers a free Carnival Sprinkle Mini Cake Doughnut free with a donut purchase. Doughnut Project in the West Village debuted an Angry Fritter made with Angry Orchard hard cider for only $3.75. Seamless partnered with The Doughnuttery to deliver 2-for-1 half-dozen boxes, meaning 12 donuts for only $6. NYC and donuts have a long history and this National Donut Day proved this relationship is still going strong.

Those who don’t live in Chicago, LA or NYC were still able to enjoy the holiday with freebies from our favorite chains. Krispy Kreme gave away free donuts to customers just for walking through the door, and Dunkin’ Donuts granted customers a free donut with the purchase of a beverage. National Donut Day 2016 was a huge success and confirmed the donut’s recent rise to fame. With a treat so delicious and heart-warming, it’s no wonder it has its own day!
