The 2016 Presidential Election, as told by Donuts
It seems that the news and our Facebook feeds are blowing up with chatter about the upcoming presidential election. One Albany donut shop has taken advantage of this chatter by creating specialty donuts representing different candidates. Cider Belly Doughnuts located in upstate New York believes that the people deserve a better donut and they are going to give it to us! Their slogan reads: “Doughnuts for the people and by the people.” So it makes sense that they are serving up election realness and encouraging people to vote (even if its just for their favorite donut flavor).
Join @ciderbellyofficial as we make politics a little sweeter this week. We have created six candidate Bellys to help us pick the winners of the NYS presidential primaries. So pop in to cast your vote, pick up your favorite candidate’s doughnut and be entered for a chance to win! More details to come on Monday.
The Cider Belly “Candidate Belly” flavors sound absolutely out of this world and have hilarious names! There’s the “What a Trump!”, a plain donut topped with chocolate mousse and sea salt caramel truffles (dusted with gold of course). Another contender, the “Booze Cruz”, is a chocolate Guinness donut with Irish cream frosting and chocolate and espresso drizzles. “The Pantsuit” for Hil is a plain donut with vanilla glaze, chocolate chip cookie crumbles and fudge and caramel drizzles. The “Special-K” for Kasich is a plain donut with wildberry frosting, vanilla drizzle and fresh berries. The “Cider Bernie” is a cider donut topped with maple buttercream with honey and siracha drizzle. They even added their own candidate, “Sugar 2016”, a plain donut with bitter chocolate frosting, a sprinkle of sea salt and Jim Bean bacon. Costumers are encouraged to vote for their favorite candidates by casting a ballot in store.
After catching up with the geniuses behind this idea, we learned that the upcoming New York primary provided inspiration for these patriotic donuts. The voting, held on April 19th, will be the first time in a long time that New York can make a difference in who will become president. Both Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump need to win New York to bounce back from previous loses. And Bernie, being a New York Native, is also active in his native state. So why not use donuts to give people the incentive to get involved in the polls?
Cider Belly also tells us that the “Cider Bernie” is in the lead right now, with “The Pantsuit” close behind, and their own “Sugar 2016” not far off! With New York as a hot ticket for campaigning; many out-of-towners have made the trip to downtown Albany to see the candidates, and ultimately Cider Belly. Final votes for “Candidate Bellys” are being collecting and the ultimate decision of which donut Trump-ed the polls will be announced soon! Cider Belly is excited to see if there is a correlation between their results and the results of the upcoming New York primary or even the 2016 election!
The 2016 presidential race is heating up and so is Cider Belly’s kitchen! If you’re in the area make sure to check them out on Pearl Street in downtown Albany.
