We believe that donuts fuel the Rocket City, and it turns out a lot of locals agree. In Huntsville, Alabama, donut offerings range from food trucks to the familiar chains. They all have their specialty, simplicity, and charm –all showcase a love of donuts and a love of people. Here are the five donut shops that are simply bucket list worthy.

1. Bigfoot's Little Donuts

Sightings of Bigfoot are an everyday occurrence in and around Huntsville. Bigfoot’s Little Donuts food truck, that is. It is the adult equivalent of an ice cream truck. Each day Facebook feeds of locals are monitored for sightings as there is never a set schedule posted. Though generally, the tour makes its way to 12021 South Memorial Parkway, where the day is complete. We highly recommend the mini cake donuts with cinnamon and sugar topping. Big Foot can be seen at locations all across Huntsville from 6:00 AM until they go back into hiding.

2. K May Donuts

The short drive to Athens is worth it for the generous portions and friendly counter service. K-May Donuts has become a family favorite for their free donut bites for the little ones. The owners have perfected a light fluffy donut that is still substantial enough to please large appetites. The flavor is unique to K-May. The batter is infused with vanilla which gives the unctuous pastry a rich flavor in every bite. The family-owned and operated business has grown to include six locations.  We recommend trying the Crispy Coated Toasted Coconut donut that would float away if not for the topping.

3. Donut Palace

As one customer says it’s the, “best thing in the south to put in your mouth!” Donut Palace is a small family-owned shop located west of Huntsville, in Madison. They offer a large variety of mouthwatering pastries, made fresh throughout the day. Filled donuts — referred to as “bombs” — authentic Kolaches, and perfectly crunchy and tender apple fritters are local favorites. The service is always friendly and quintessentially southern.  You have to try the Lemon Cream Bomb.

4. The Donut Hole

Huntsville residents were thrilled earlier this year when The Donut Hole re-opened. It had long been a staple of downtown Huntsville, serving the area for 20 years before closing briefly following the passing of its beloved owner, Ann Marie Green El — affectionately known as “Nana.” Now the mantle has passed to her granddaughter LaRoda. Locals are raving about the housemade glazed, filled, cake, and specialty donuts, apple fritters, and cinnamon. The family of Philadelphia natives also serve some mean hoagies and authentic cheesesteaks, as well.  We love the simplicity and Yum! of the perfectly executed apple fritters.
